Police conducts surprise raids; 700 detained
Chennai, Sep 9 (UNI) In a midnight swoop on history-sheeters, police have taken into custody about 700 people as part of crime prevention measures in the city and its suburbs.
Police said the arrests were made during surprise raids and vehicle-checks.
The simultaneous raids were carried out by various teams headed by City Police Commissioner Nanjil Kumaran, Joint Commissioners Ravi, Balasubramanian and Durairaj, besides Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners and Inspectors.
During the drive, about 1,700 two-wheeler riders were caught for riding without helmet, drunken driving and overspeeding.
Lodges, important junctions and 56 checkposts came under the scanner during the raids.
In the police action, 698 persons were interrogated, of which 12 were held under non-bailable warrants.
