Ganges Art Gallery inaugurated in Kolkata

Kolkata, Sep 9 (UNI) The Ganges Art Gallery was infused with life and colours in its inaugural show here, manifesting the paintings of some distinguished and budding artists from across the country.

Lighting the inaugural lamp, CPI(M) State Secretary Biman Bose said, ''Kolkata is famous for artists' forum where the art galleries like the Ganges serve to encourage young artists and thereby open up new vista for the budding artists.'' The prominent name associated with the Gallery is Smita Bajoria, an art enthusiast and collector.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Bajoria said, ''Ganges Art offers varied forms of art such as tradition, modernity, post-modernity and indigenism.'' ''The Art Gallery is not only for art enthusiasts from West Bengal but also for those from across India,'' she said hoping the art would bring in international art in the form of paintings, photography and the like.

The Gallery saw eminent visitors like former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmia.

There were altogether 97 painting collections from various illustrated and emerging young artists like Shuva Prasanna, Wasim Kapoor, Sunil Das, Manjari Chakraborty, Pankaj Panwar, Fatima Ahmad, Surya Prakash, Shipra Bhattacharya, jogen Chouwdhury, K Muralidharan, C Douglas and others.

The medium of the painting, most artists opted for, included watercolours on paper, acrylic on canvas, pastel colours on paper, oil on canvas, acrylic and charcoal on canvas, glass painting, wood and bronze.

The art exhibition, that kicked off on September 7, would continue till September 25.
