Flood threat haunts UP, 25,000 population affected

Lucknow, Sep 8 (UNI) The flood threat is looming large in Uttar Pradesh again, following consistent rise in the water level of seasonal rivers in Ruhelkhand region of western UP and the turbulent Ghaghra and Rapti rivers in eastern UP.

Almost 25,000 population in 75 villages along the river course faced hardships owing to the overflowing Ghaghra, a report from Basti said.

In Bareilly, several villages of Ruhelkhand were under the threat of flood owing to the consistent rise in the water level of the seasonal rivers. Standing crops in several thousand acre land had been destroyed.

Food Scarcity of food was also reported from several villages of the district, a number of people had so far drowned in the waters of the swelling rivers.

In one such case two siblings Laxmi (4) and Arti (10) drowned in the overflowing Behgul river in Jaitipur area of Shahjahanpur district last evening.

Owing to incessant downpour in Uttarakhand and release of several thousand cusecs water from barrages, the swelling Sharda, Behgul, Kosi, Ramganga, Devha, Apsara and Lakra rivers are on the rise in UP.

In Gorakhpur, Chitauni embankment had been damaged owing to the increasing pressure in the Gandak river.
