New Delhi, Sep 7 (UNI) Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan called this evening for implementing serious recommendations of various Law Commissions.

The Law Commission has produced more than 200 reports in 51 years, many of which remain unimplemented.

Speaking at a function where he released a book titled Legislative Drafting: Shaping the Law for the New Millennium, Justice Balakrishnan stressed enacting laws people need.

Published in 1980 as Drafting of Laws by G Rajagopaul, first draftsman to head the Law Ministry's Legislative Department, the new publication is a revised and updated version put together by Law Secretary T K Viswanathan.

Justice Balakrishnan said law should be for greatest happiness to greatest number of people and asserted that Indian laws were inferior to none.

Law and Justice Minister Hans Raj Bhardwaj, who presided, said India's legal system was moving towards fast track.

He said there was nowadays demand for legislation one never thought of before, such as to meet the challenge of terrorism.

Viswanathan said legislative drafting was a discipline which needed continuous training to write laws that affect ordinary citizens from cradle to grave.

''With the legislative machinery churning out a steady mass of legislation, it becomes necessary for the stakeholders to understand the law making process.'' He said India may soon have an institute on legislative drafting.

Bhardwaj also released the digitised version of a law journal containing material pertaining to the past half a century.
