HC admits Jaya's petition on contempt case
Madurai, Sep 7: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has admitted a petition filed by AIADMK supremo and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa seeking a stay on further proceedings in a contempt of court case pending against her in a lower court.
Admitting the petition last evening, Justice S Nagamuthu posted the matter to September 21 for final hearing.
In her Civil Revision Petition, Ms Jayalalithaa prayed for quashing the proceedings pending before the Tiruchirapalli District Munsiff Court by referring the same to the Apex Court.
Four Congress supporters filed the contempt application before the Munsiff Court following Ms Jayalalithaa's alleged remarks against the Supreme Court order on Congress President Sonia Gandhi's citizenship.
Ms Jayalalithaa contended the case was outside the purview of a District Munsiff or Civil Court for that matter as the proceedings of a civil suit were regulated by the Code of Civil Procedure.
