Puducherry, Sep 7 (UNI) Taking strong exception to the registration of a case under Section 304(A) of the IPC against a doctor here, a delegation of medical professionals today sought the intervention of Lt Governor Mukut Mithi for withdrawing the case.

Led by Medical Officers Association President G S Naidu, the delegation called on the Lt Governor and explained to him in detail the circumstances leading to the death of Selvaduari, a patient admitted to the government general hospital for kidney failure.

Later, talking to newspersons, Dr Naidu said according to a Supreme Court direction there were certain guidelines for registering a case against a doctor and Sec 304 (A) cannot be used.

Cases against a doctor could be registered only after a thorough investigation by an expert committee and this advice was given to the Tamil Nadu police.

He claimed Selvadurai, who had only 15 to 20 per cent kidney functioning, died due to diarrhoea and infection and no doctor functioned with an intention to kill.

In fact, Dr Murugesan (against whom the case was registered) was instrumental in the introduction of the kidney transplantion facility at the government general hospital here, he added.

Dr Naidu also said they got information the case was registered against Dr Murugesan on the direction of a legislator which was ridiculous.

If the police failed to withdraw the case, they would lodge complaints against the police. Later, Mr Mithi summoned the IGP, SSP and the SP to his office for a discussion on the matter.
