Health insurance for unorganised sector workers: Cabinet

New Delhi, Sep 6 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today announced a health insurance scheme for workers in the unorganised sector which will be rolled in a phased manner for below poverty line (BPL) families.

The scheme, approved at a Cabinet meeting, will be formally launched on October 2, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters.

This would be in addition to the 'Aam Admi Bima Yojana,' already in force, he said.

Under the new scheme, which would be implemented and monitored by the states, smart cards would be issued to the beneficiaries.

The relevant Bill would be introduced in the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament and referred to the Standing Committee.

A maximum of five members of each BPL family would be covered under the scheme. It would be the responsibility of the implementing agencies to verify the eligibility of the unorganised sector workers and his family members who are proposed to be benefitted.
