Centre to ask Pondy Govt to devolve powers to local bodies

Puducherry, Sep 6 (UNI) The Union Government will pressurise the Puducherry administration to devolve powers to the elected local body representatives in the Union Territory.

This assurance was given by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to a delegation of elected representatives from here, who called on them in New Delhi yesterday, PMK Parliamentary leader M Ramadass, who led the delegation, said in a statement here today.

The delegation had called on President Pratibha Patil, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Ministers of the Union Home, Panchayati Raj, Rural Development and Urban evelopment departments during their two-day stay in the Capital.
