14 ULFA militants surrender in Assam

Guwahati, Sep 6: Altogether 14 ULFA militants, led by a ''sergeant major'', mostly operative in lower Assam, surrendered before Special Branch officials here today.

SB sources informed that the militants, who laid down arms today, were from the ''709 battalion'' of ULFA, which was active in lower Assam.

''Sergeant major'' Robin Bezbaruah led the ULFA cadres in the surrender ceremony.

The cadres of this ''battalion'' of the banned outfit had been instrumental in the recent blasts in Guwahati.

Arrest of prime suspects in the latest Guwahati blast had revealed that the cadres of ''709 battalion'' of the outlawed organisation were carrying out strikes in the capital city under orders of the ''commandant'' of the ''battalion'' Akash Thapa.
