BSNL cables stolen, phone service out of order

Jammu, Sep 5 (UNI) BSNL services came to a halt in the posh localities here after a gang of thieves fled away with cables worth lakhs of rupees, Police said.

As per sources, a gang of thieves lifted BSNL cable worth Rs 14 lakh under the Trikuta Nagar police station affecting telephone network in the area.

A gang of thieves yesterday night arrived in a tractor trolley and parked their vehicle outside the RBI building and started pilfering with underground BSNL cable, police said.

However, the gang convinced a police patrol party that they had been engaged by the BSNL for carrying out repair and relaying of cable in the area and went on with their job.

Meanwhile, general manager BSNL R K Koul this afternoon said the thieves had cut the cable rolls worth Rs 14 lakh before escaping the scene of the incident.

At least 1600 meters of cables had been looted, thereby affecting 6500 telephone lines in Trikuta Nagar and Transport Nagar, he said.

A complaint was lodged with the police station and it may take at least three days to restore the telephone services in the area, Mr Koul added.
