Schedule for Pak presidential poll likely on Sep 5

Islamabad, Sept 3: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is likely to announce the schedule for presidential election after its meeting on Wednesday.

Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retired) Qazi Muhammad Farooq will chair the meeting.

The Constitutional experts of the presidential lobby wanted the election to be held between September 15 and October 15.

Farooq, who will also be returning officer for the presidential election, is expected to return to Islamabad from Abbotabad today.

On Friday, Attorney General Malik Muhammad Qayyum said that according to the Constitution, President General Pervez Musharraf was allowed to contest the presidential election in uniform.

Musharraf has been insisting that he would seek re-election in uniform from the present assemblies.

The Supreme Court has already constituted a seven-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar M Chaudhry to hear a number of petitions objecting to Musharraf's re-election in uniform.

Parliamentary elections are due to follow the presidential poll within three months.
