Amritsar, Sep 3 (UNI) A 61-year old agriculturist's 'survival' has surprised top cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and the medical fraternity in the country and abroad.

The surgery performed on the farmer is the first case in world medical history of a patient treated with a rare combination of "triple-bypass and insertion of a cardiac device inside the heart on a "Beating Heart".

The patient, Hardeep Singh was suffering from a "complex" heart condition with multiple-organ failure and had just a fraction of a chance for survival.

Dr H S Pannu chief cardiac surgeon and Dr Puneet Verma chief cardiologist of 'Escorts Heart and Super Specialty Institute' here heading the operating team of doctors explained at a press conference today that the patient was suffering from a complex and massive heart attack involving damage to both the left and right major heart chambers .

This was accompanied by total rupture of 'septum' (main partition of the major chamber of heart) causing impure blood mixing with pure blood, a life threatening condition, which leads to death in 90 per cent of the patients within one week.

Apart from this, the patient was also suffering from multiple organ failure including liver, lungs and both kidneys owing to which the survival chances were practically nil .

The two doctors explained that the patient had advanced blockages in all three arteries of heart along with feeble pump function of left and right heart chambers.
