Punjab CM for central univ in Shaheed Bhagat Singh's name

Chandigarh, Sep 3 (UNI) The Punjab government has requested the Central Government to allot a central university to the border state to be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh, whose birth centenary is being celebrated on September 28 An appeal in this context has been made by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Chief Minister said this would be the nation's noble gesture to the everlasting memory of the great martyr. Mr Badal has already written to the Prime Minister in this regard.

Meanwhile, presiding over a meeting to finalise the birth centenary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh alongwith fellow martyrs Shaheed Rajguru and Shaheed Sukhdev here today, Mr Badal gave a call to all the political parties, organisers, eminent citizens, intellectuals, educationists, students etc to observe the martyr's centenary as a mass movement so as to reawaken the spirit of nationalism.

According to an important decision taken at the committee meeting, marches would begin from the places associated with national martyrs in Punjab and converge at Jallianwala Bagh on September 27. The places from where these marches would start are Dhudike, birthplace of Lala Lajpat Rai, Khatkar Kalan, native place of Bhagat Singh, Ludhiana, the native place of Shaheed Sukhdev, Sunam, native place of Shaheed Udham Singh and Sarabha, associated with Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha.

Each march would carry a martyr's flame (mashal) to be consecrated at the Flame of Liberty in the Jallianwala Bagh.

Similarly, marches from places associated with prominent events in the freedom movement like the Gaddar Movement, the Babbar Akali Movement, the Kuka Movement, the Kamagatamaru, the Prajamandal, the Jaito Ka Morcha Movement etc would also be taken out.
