Chinese STF to participate in anti-terrorist exercise in Russia

Moscow, Sep 3 (UNI) Chinese special task force (STF) unit code-named 'Snow Leopard' today arrived at Chkalovsky aerodrome here from to participate in anti-terrorist exercises 'Friendship-2007'.

The Chinese unit comprising about 100 servicemen have brought some of their own hardware and equipment used in combat operations.

The joint anti-terrorist exercises will enter a crucial stage on September 4, to be held at the base of the Russian Interior special task force division stationed in Balashikha in the Moscow region.

The Chief of Russia's Interior troops Press Service, Colonel Vasily Panchenkov told Itar- Tass news agency that from Russia, a special task force unit - Vityaz (Knight), will participate in the wargames.

Under the scenario of the joint manoeuvres, a ringleader of a criminal group was arrested in the Russian-Chinese border area.

In retaliation, his accomplices took people hostage on the territory of the Russian Federation and demanded the ringleader's release and guarantee that they will be able to escape by air to one of the neighbouring countries.

As several Chinese citizens are among the hostages, a special task force unit of Chinese police is taking part in the operation for the hostages' release.

Deputy Russian Interior Troops commander Major-General Yuri Babkin and his Chinese counterpart are supervising the exercises.

''There is a chance to see everything with one's own eyes and take over the best from the Chinese experience, coordinate and practice the tactics of rebuff to common threats, including terrorism and extremism,'' Gen Babkin said.

The 'Snow Leopard' unit was created in December 2002. It is based in Beijing and has a status of a state-run anti-terrorist formation. Over the past few years, it took part in 90 operations for elimination of the aftermath of terrorist acts and fulfilled other tasks.
