Khanduri leads Cong candidate by 1885 votes

Dehra Dun, Sep 2 (UNI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister and BJP candidate Maj Gen (Retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri was leading over his rival Congress candidate by 1885 votes in the Dhumakot assembly bypoll, counting for which began at 1045 hrs today.

The election, which was held on August 29, registered a polling percentage of 62.31. Of the total 50,893 electors, 31,710 voters, including 18,082 women, excercised their franchise.

The polling was necessitated following the resignation of Lt Gen (Retd) Tej Pal Singh Rawat, then a Congress member, who later joined BJP.

Maj Gen Khanduri was to gain a State Assembly membership within six months after he became chief minister. He is presently a Lok Sabha member from the Pauri constituency.
