Bangalore, Sep 2 (UNI) The India Buildings Congress (IBC) will draft an Indian rating system for 'green buildings' to help preserve the environment.

Talking to UNI here, IBC President A Chakrabarti said the organisation was helping draft an Indian code, similar to the one in the US Green Building Council.

The new draft would help the builders to adapt environment friendly methods and materials and curb unhealthy spread of structures in the cities.

''We want to reduce the energy use in urban areas. Green buildings, that sustain themselves, envisage less use of energy and recyclable building material like bamboo instead of wood as it can be grown faster than wood,'' he said.

He noted that the guidelines would help Union and State governments in streamlining the building laws and create environment friendly urban sprawls.

The green buildings would have rain water harvesting system and would use recycled water for other than drinking purposes.

It would reduce impact on human health and environment through better design, construction, ventilation, maintenance and complete building life cycle, he added.
