Port Blair, Sep 2 (UNI) Continuous rain helped to restore water supply in the South Andaman region, which had been facing scarcity of drinking water.

Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Bhupinder Singh today directed the Andaman PWD to supply water to the general public once in two days in lieu of the existing 'once in three days'.

Hit by severe water curtailment, the resident's of Port Blair were demanding the restoration of regular water supply, which was disrupted since December due to scarcity of water.

'' Normalcy in water supply is a great relief for all,'' Mr K Ganeshan, the chief spokesperson of Andaman and Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee told UNI.

The supply of water is handled by the Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC), the lone civic body in Andaman and Nicobar Islands while supplying water to the PBMC is the responsibility of the Andaman PWD, which also stores and treats water.

There are also reports that the water level in the Dhanikhari dam, the lone water reservoir of South Andaman has risen due to continuous rain.
