Workshop on commodities market held for farmers

Nashik, Sep 1 (UNI) A workshop on commodities market was organised today here jointly by the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited (MCX), the Forward Market Commission and the Shetkari Sangathana.

The workshop was organised only for farmers and MCX vice president (market operations) Girish Raipuria and Forward Market Commission member Rajeev Agarwal were among those who guided the participants on the occasion.

The workshop had been organised to make the farmers aware about the functioning of the commodities market, futures trading, and such other subjects.

Mr Agarwal, speaking on the occasion, told the participants how the commodities market could help farmers in getting knowledge about the national prices of commodities. With this information, the farmers can negotiate the prices of their produce and, thus, protect themselves from being exploited.

The farmers can also get knowledge about the future prices and decide to sell their produce at their own will and at the time they want. This will inrease the bargaining power of the farmers, Mr Agarwal said.

The farmers should use all the information and take the right decision, Mr Agarwal said and added, ''We are making afforts that more aggregators should enter the market which will benefit the farmers.'' ''We are also trying to seek government permission to make banks, cooperative societies to work as aggregators which will benefit the farmers,'' he added.

In this effort, the MCX will make available ticker lines at nearly 1000 Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) all over the nation. These will make the farmers aware of the national prices of the commodities, Mr Agarwal said. Many farmers from the district participated in the workshop.
