least
eight
people
were
killed
and
40
injured
today
when
two
suburban
trains
collided
on
the
outskirts
of
Rio
de
Janeiro,
officials
said.
More than 100 rescue workers were helping people from the wreckage, said a spokeswoman for the mayor's office of Nova Iguacu, a suburb of Rio.
Dozens of ambulances were at the crash site.
A fire brigade spokesman said two of the dead were train crewmen.
GloboNews television showed footage of the wreckage with at least one carriage lying on its side and rescue workers trying to take people out.
An official with the Supervia train company estimated around 800 people were on one of the trains involved in the crash.
