Guwahati, Aug 30 (UNI) Two hardcore Karbi rebels were gunned down by the Army during an encounter in the trouble-torn Karbi Anglong district today morning.

Defence sources said 'Sergeant Major' Dimapur Bey and 'Lance Corporal' Harbaman were holed up in a house at Timung village in Rangagora under Howraghat police station when troops of the 11 Maratha Light Infantry surrounded them and asked them to give up.

The rebels opened fire on the troops prompting the Army to retaliate. Both the rebels were shot dead on the spot. There was no casualty on the Army side, sources added.

The militants belonged to the Karbi Longri National Liberation Front, which is blamed for the recent strikes on Hindi-speaking people in the district.

An US-made .45 machine gun with 15 live cartridges, a 9mm pistol, CDs, batteries, a TV, a radio, mobile phones, Army fatigues, torches and Rs 79,483 cash were seized from the house.
