Five arrested for violence during Gohana protests

Sonepat, Aug 30 (UNI) Five people have been arrested by the police for allegedly attacking police personnel and government officials, damaging the public and private property and attempting to forcibly getting the shops closed in Gohana town in this district during recent protests over murder of a Dalit youth.

In a press statement, SSP Navdeep Singh Virk today stated that Jaswinder of village Khanda and Deepak and Akash of Gohana were arrested for their involvement in attacking and injuring the police personnel on duty, damaging other public and private property on August 27 night.

They have been sent in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Gohana resident Sonu and Navneet were arrested today for their alleged involvement in forcing the shopkeepers of Gohana to close their shops yesterday. A case under various sections was registered against them in the city police station Gohana.

The plan to take out a protest march in this town today by the Balmiki Community was cancelled following a reported death of an aged woman of a Balmiki locality here.

Parliamentary Secretary, Anil Thakkar along with the City Magistrate, went to the locality and accepted a memorandum. As a precautionary measure, police also staged a flag march in some parts of the town here.

Meanwhile, leaders of various political parties today visited Balmiki Basti at Gohana to console the death of Rakesh Alias Lara, a Balmiki youth who was shot dead by three unidentified criminals on the night of August 27.

The leaders including Union Minister of State Kumari Selja of Congress, Deputy Speaker Lok Sabha Charanjit Singh Atwal, Paramjit Singh and Sukhdev both MP of Akali Dal and and Former Union Minister S.N. Jatia and MPs Avinash Rai, Narain Singh Kesari, Krishan Lal Diler and Ram Nath Kovin of BJP.

They condemned the murder and demanded immediate arrest of the alleged accused.

The BJP and Akali leaders said that they would raise the matter in the parliament.
