Mumbai, Aug 30 (UNI) A convict attempted to commit suicide today by jumping out of the court's window after he was sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in a rape-cum-murder case.

Vijay Jadhav attempted to commit suicide after being sentenced to life imprisonment by Additional Sessions Judge K U Chandiwal.

As soon as Jadhav was brought out from the court room after the judgement, he tried to jump out of the window. However, the escorting team caught hold of him, police said.

Judge Chandiwal held Jadhav guilty under sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code to suffer life imprisonment for rape and murder of a woman in 2005.

Additional Public Prosecutor J Dedhia said both the accused and the victim were neighbours at Gautam Nagar slum area in Powai. They had an illicit relationship. At the time of the incident, the woman was married and had two kids.

On October 13, 2005, the accused and victim had gone to Marol, where they quarreled over a petty issue. Thereafter, Jadhav raped and strangulated the woman in Marol's jungle. To destroy the evidence, he tried to burn the body, but it did not burn fully, so he threw the body in the jungle. After two-three days, the BMC officials found the body when they had gone there and they accordingly informed the police.

Meanwhile, the victim's husband had already lodged a missing complaint with the Powai police station. When the photograph of the body was shown to him, he identified it and told the police that she had an affair with the accused. Based on that, Jadhav was arrested, police added.
