UHBVN detects 7054 cases of power pilferage

Chandigarh, Aug 29 (UNI) Intensifying its campaign for curbing theft of electricity, the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) has detected 7054 cases of pilferage of power up to August 15 in its command area.

The command area comprises Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat, Rohtak, Jhajjar and Jind districts.

An official spokesman said the UHBVN teams checked 76112 consumer premises and imposed a penalty of Rs 5.58 crore on the erring consumers out of which Rs 2.67 crore had been recovered.

Maximum cases of theft of power had been detected in operation circle Kurukshetra comprising Kurukshetra and Kaithal districts.

He said the Nigam had targeted to detect 40,000 cases of theft of power during the current fiscal. Loss of electricity due to pilferage was the main reason of aggregated transmission and commercial losses.

The Nigam, he said, would initiate action against the erring consumers for criminal and civil liabilities. FIRs would be lodged with the police within 24 hours after detection of theft.

Besides, the Nigam had disconnected the connections of 84303 non-payers, he added.
