Tripura Congress demands inquiry into attack

Agartala, Aug 29 (UNI) The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has demanded inquiry into the alleged assault on a Congress Panchayat member yesterday.

TPCC sources here today alleged that CPI(M) workers physically assaulted West Gandhigram Panchayat member Biswajit Saha in the committee meeting when he asked for a statement of government funds spent in various projects.

TPCC member and local MLA Prakash Das alleged that CPI(M) supporters had embezzled the funds sanctioned for infrastructure development in the area.

''Mr Saha was attacked in front of the block development officer and other Panchayat members when he demanded detail expenditure statement from the Panchayat chief,'' Mr Das said.

Police said they had launched investigation after an FIR was lodged. However, no one was arrested so far, police added.
