Monsoon turns weak in Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh, Aug 29 (UNI) Monsoon turned weak in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Union Territory, leading to a dry spell at most places in the region today.

Hot and humid weather conditions persisted at many places in the plains following an erratic monsoon in the region.

Even as lull in rainfall activity continued, certain areas in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, including Kullu district, received light to moderate downpour overnight.

In Punjab, Shahpur Kandi recorded 14.4 mm rain till 0830 hours, followed by Madopur measuring 12.0 mm. However, there was no report of rainfall from Haryana.

In Himachal Pradesh, Solang Nala was the wettest place with 30.0 mm rain recorded overnight. Dhundi registered 9.4 mm, Berthin 7.4 mm, Rampur 6.0 mm and Kasol 4.5 mm rainfll. Parts of Mandi, Kangra and upper areas of Shimla district also experienced rain. Sundernagar also had rainfall.

Humid weather conditions prevailed in Chandigarh which went without rains for the third day today. The city recorded the maximum humidity at 89 per cent and the minimum at 70 per cent.

The Weather Office said light to moderate rain or thundershowers may occur at few places in Himachal Pradesh and at isolated places in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours.
