Militant killed, Lashkar operative held in Kashmir
Srinagar, Aug 29 (UNI) Security forces killed a militant and averted a major tragedy when they apprehended a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operative who was planning to lob a grenade in Kashmir today.
Based on information, a defence spokesman said ambushes were established by 2 Para in Kanigur Nar, 10 km from Chakkigam in border district of Kupwara in north Kashmir.
He said suspicious movement was observed by troops during the ambush at 1600 hrs. Militants opened fire which was effectively retaliated by troops.
In the ensuing gun-battle, the spokesman said a militant was killed in. The operation was in progress when reports last came in.
The spokesman said 10 Assam launched another search operation in general area Ench, five km from Chokibal, also in Kupwara district.
During the search, security forces seized a polythene bag concealed under a boulder containing one AK rifle, one 8mm rifle, seven 9mm pistol, one .22 pistol, one AK magazine, one 8mm rifle magazine, one .22 pistol magazine, 720 rounds of AK ammunition, 18 rounds of 8mm ammunition, three hand grenades, 12 detonators, four IEDs (box types), one IED belt type, two RS Icom, one RS Kenwood, one RS ante, one compass, four Bino and one Pakistani newspaper.
Police said they averted a major tragedy today by apprehending the LeT operative who was planning to lob a grenade in Kupwara.
They said that further questioning of the suspect was on.
Security forces apprehended a suspect at Jamlan Dharam Gool in Ramban district and seized a bag containing one hand grenade, three AK magazines, 90 AK rounds, one transistor and a diary.
In yesterday's encounter at Lashidat in Machhil sector of Kupwara district, five infiltrators were killed. Four AK rifles, 16 magazines, 342 rounds, one wireless set, two TNT slabs (explosives), four wire cutters, 20 mt cordex, one solar charger and Rs 20,000 in Indian currency were seized from the slain militants.
