Quake hits Tonga archipelago - USGS

WASHINGTON, Aug 27 (Reuters) A magnitude 5.7 quake hit the South Pacific archipelago of Tonga today, the US Geological Survey reported.

The USGS said the quake, very shallow at a depth of only 6.2 miles, occurred at 2242 hrs IST and had an epicenter located 143 miles northeast of Neiafu in Tonga. It gave no further details.
