SINGAPORE, Aug 28 (Reuters) Gold held near New York levels on Tuesday, lacking the impetus to rise as fears of a global credit crisis lingered, while Tokyo futures shed the previous day's gains on profit taking.

-- Spot gold was at $666.20/667.00 an ounce, barely changed from $666.40/667.20 late in New York on Monday.

-- Most active June 2008 gold futures on the Commodity Exchange fell 18 yen per gram to 2,500 yen, having risen to its best level in more than a week at 2,526 yen on Monday on a weaker yen.

-- Investors showed no sign of abandoning their positions in bullion exchange-traded funds (ETFs) even though liquidity fears took a toll on sentiment in the commodity and financial markets.

-- Bullion used to back StreetTRACKS Gold Shares , the world's largest gold ETF by bar, climbed to a record 515.44 tonnes as of Friday. -- The dollar slid to 115.56 yen from 115.85 yen in Monday's late U.S. trade. The euro edged down to $1.3633 from $1.3645.

-- Of particular interest to investors will be developments this week regarding potential monetary policy responses to relatively high financial market volatility and toughening lending conditions, including a speech on Friday by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

-- This week, investors will be especially focused on Bernanke's speech on Friday to see if he sheds light on whether market developments require additional monetary policy responses.

-- Platinum rose to $1,250/1,255 an ounce from $1,248.50/1,255.50 an ounce late in New York.

-- Palladium rose to $328/333 an ounce from $327/331 late in New York.

-- Silver edged down to $11.74/11.77 an ounce from $11.78/11.81 an ounce.
