Globalisation of 'Dahi Handi': MTDC
Mumbai, Aug 28: The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), in association with a Thane-based social organisation, has decided to promote 'dahi handi' at the global level taking into account the attraction for the festival among foreigners.
Talking to reporters here, Maharashtra Minister of State for Tourism Suresh Shetty said 'Gopal kala', popularly known as 'dahi handi' or 'Govinda', in which human pyramids are formed to break the earthen pot hanged overhead at various heights is now becoming a global attraction. Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has joined hands with 'Sangharsh', which is organising this event for the last couple of years.
''Several foreign diplomats have shown keen interest in this vibrant and dynamic culture of Maharashtra,''said Mr Shetty.
The audio-video presentation of the 'Govinda' will be displayed at all global forums,'' he added.
He also released a brouchure about Govinda festival on the occasion.
''The event will be organised in Thane on September 4 and there will be a prize money of Rs 2,55,555 for a Govinda team, which will make the highest pyramid to break the 'dahi handi' and for a nine- storeyed pyramid, there will be a prize of Rs 1,11,111,'' said Sangharsh promoter Mr Avad.
Last year, several members of the 'Govinda' team had gone to Spain for popalanisation of the sport.
Nearly 67 teams, including that of girls, are expected to participate in this year's event.
