Mah: 10 debt-ridden farmers commit suicide
Nagpur, Aug 29: As many as ten debt-ridden farmers committed suicide in the past two days in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, according to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation.
The ten farmers who ended their lives include, three from Yavatmal district, two each from Akola and Wardha districts and one each from Amravati, Buldhana and Gondia districts, a VJAS press release stated.
With this, the number of farmers who have ended their lives in 2007 has touched 615. These include 70 in January, 86 in February, 82 in March, 90 in April, 79 in May, 68 in June, 64 in July and 76 in August, the release added.
A total of 1,335 farmers have taken the extreme step since the announcement of the Prime Minister's relief package on July 1, 2006, it concluded.
