Chennai, Aug 26 (UNI) MDMK General Secretary Vaiko along with his supporters today observed a day-long fast in the southern Tirunelveli district to promote communal amity and peace in Tenkasi town, were six people were hacked to death in communal clashes on August 14.

Mr Vaiko had originally scheduled to observe the fast at Tenkasi, but later shifted the venue to Tirunelveli as the tension following the killings was yet to cease.

Besides, police had also advised against organising public meetings in Tenkasi in view of the prevailing situation.

Mr Vaiko said it was unfortunate that two communities, who had been living in peace for several decades, indulged in ''bloody quarrel''. These incidents could not be ignored and should be nipped in the bud.

In such clashes, people belonging to both the groups were victimised and the sufferers were the families of the deceased.

These type of incidents would also create ill-will and hatred between the two communities, which in turn would affect communal harmony in the area, he said.
