Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, Aug 26 (UNI) Mongrels are being used by both police and naxals in tribal-dominated Bastar division.

The men in khaki rely on the canines for locating landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) while the rebels use the dogs for eluding cops. About 150 police personnel have been martyred by landmine blasts on Bastar's roads and in forest areas this year.

The mongrels are being trained at the Jungle War College Police Training Centre at Kanker district headquarters on the initiative of Brigadier (Retd) B K Panwar. Kareena, Shaili, Lily and Teja were trained to locate landmines and IEDs.

On the other hand, the ultras train the canines in Gondi dialect and make them guard camps. The dogs are even made to accompany the extremists on their assaults.

''The mongrels begin barking as soon as police approach and the insurgents flee. This has happened several times,'' a police officer said.

Salwa Judum leaders and a few police officers allege that Naga Armed Force constables hunt the canines for meat and that is why the dogs' number is declining. About four months' back, a constable died after falling into a well while attempting to catch a mongrel.
