Silchar, Aug 26 (UNI) Heavy landslide at Sonapur today stopped traffic on National Highway 44, which connects Badarpur in Barak Valley with Jawai in Mehgalaya.

BRTF 97 RCC sources in Katigora said due to incessant rains since the last 24 hours, huge boulders, mud and trees came down the hills at Sonapur 91 kms from here.

About 300 metres of the road now remain covered by debris, resulting in the suspension of vehicular traffic on the National Highway. Hundreds of vehicles have been stranded on both sides of the landslide-hit area.

Reportedly, there has been no loss of life.

This has caused Assam's Barak valley, Tripura, Mizoram and the western part of Manipur to be disconnected from the rest of the country.

A senior BRTF official said the quantum of debris was very large.

He could not say when the road could be restored.

The official also said there was no scope for restoration of traffic within the next couple of days since rains would continue in the valley area.
