House set ablaze, 31 under police detention
Guwahati, Aug 26 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the Doomdooma township of Upper Assam today following yesterday's stray incidents of violence with police beginning verification of credentials of the 31 suspected Bangladeshis handed over to them by student activists.
Based on inputs from local people, activists of AASU, AJYCP and other civil societies launched a campaign in the Shankardevnagar area of the town in Tinsukia district.
Altogether 31 persons from 10 families who had come to the place recently were handed over to police for verification. The persons have been detained at Doomdooma police station.
Miscreants had also set ablaze a house in the area, triggering tension in the area.
Meanwhile, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad(AJYCP) today submitted a memorandum to the Tinsukia deputy commissioner to take measures to detect and deport the suspected immigrants who had entered and settled in the district.
