GSU demands stringent laws to detect illegal immigrants

Shillong, Aug 26 (UNI) The Garo Students' Union (GSU) today asked the Meghalaya government to implement stringent laws to check the infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals.

GSU president Utzol Ch Sangma here said,''The unabated influx of Bangladeshis into the region is threatening the demography of indigenous population, especially in the plain belt areas of Garo Hills.'' The tribal student body, which took up the matter with state chief secretary Ranjan Chatterjee stated that thousands of Bangladeshis have settled permanently in the western plain areas of West Garo Hills, including Garobadha, Phulbari, Chibinang, Tikrikilla, Ampati Rajabala, Bhaitbari and Mahendraganj.

''The Bangladeshi settlers are also demanding political right which is a threat to the indigenous people and terrorist threats,'' Mr Sangma said.

He said even the lands belonging to indigenous people were being illegally captured by illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
