Centre keen to promote seabuckthron industry: Ramash

Srinagar, Aug 26 (UNI) The Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh has said the centre is keen to promote Seabuckthron Industry in Ladakh and asked the Hill Council, Leh to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) at the earliest.

The Minister was speaking after inaugurating a one-day workshop on Promotion of Agri-Horticulture Production of Leh here yesterday.

The workshop was jointly organised by Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurs Development Institute and Agricultural and Processed Food Production Export Development Authority, Government of India.

Observing tremendous potential of Seabuckthron production in Leh, Mr Ramesh said Ladakh is the only place in India where Seabuckthron is produced and the centre would promote it at all costs. It has a rich nutritive as well as medicinal value and thus would fetch good prices in national and international market, he added.

He said the Seabuckthron products are needed to acquire certification for organic and improvement in processing, packaging and asked the Hill Council to make a Detail Project report through reputed consultant which should be submitted to his Ministry within shortest time.

The Minister also suggested opening Seabuckthron Industry for Private Entrepreneurs to make it more competitive.

The Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Leh Chering Dorje said Seabuckthron Industry is presently handled by Cooperative Department, Leh by mobilizing Panchayats.

He said 25 per cent of vegetable requirement of Army in Ladakh is fulfilled by this and requested the Minister for provision of funds for cold storage.

The Deputy Commissioner, Leh Dr M K Bhardari gave a report on the topographical condition with special emphasis on agriculture and horticulture products.
