Tibetans against China hosting Olympics

Chennai, Aug 25 (UNI) The Tibetan Students' Association of Madras (TSAM) today observed a token hunger strike here, condemning China hosting the 2008 Olympic Games in view of ''ongoing human rights violations in Tibet''.

''We register our protest against human rights violations and seek justice in Tibet for the countless political prisoners undergoing untold sufferings in jails...A Government (China) that cannot safeguard its citizens' basic human rights has no moral right to host the Olympics,'' Association members told newspersons here.

Demanding that the Chinese Government improve human rights conditions in Tibet, they pointed out that they had presented a six-fold proposal to China for improvement of human rights in Tibet, including release of political and religious prisoners, ensuring freedom of speech and expression, abolishing one-child policy in Tibet and stop depriving Tibetans of legal right to leave and enter their state.
