Earlier, when news about Salman's surrender reached here, a team, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Sawai Singh Godara reached the airport. The 41-year-old actor, accompanied by his lawyer Deepesh Mehta and brother Sohail Khan, was arrested as soon as he landed.

In a last-ditch effort to evade non-bailable arrest warrant, issued by the District and Sessions Court yesterday, Salman decided to surrender to the police even as a special police team was dispatched to Mumbai yesterday for taking him into custody.

The District and Sessions Court Judge Kamal Raj Singhvi yesterday had upheld the lower court's verdict of April 10, 2006, sentencing him to five years rigorous imprisonment for poaching chinkara.

Salman's appeal for 10 days time to surrender was also rejected.

The actor was convicted for poaching a chinkara, a species of protected antelope, in Ghoda Farm under Mathania police station in 1998 while shooting for Suraj Badjatya's film 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'.

The hearing on the revision petition will take place in the High Court either on August 29. Salman's counsel had urged the court to hear the review and bail petition on August 27 but the court would declined, saying his appeal would be heard according to case listings.

The actor would be released only if the High Court admits his bail application.

Salman's other appeal against one year imprisonment for poaching two black bucks in Bhavad village the same year, is pending in court and will come up for hearing on September 10.
