Tirupati, Aug 25 (UNI) The Sri Padmavathi Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMV) can act as a catalyst to usher in attitudinal changes towards gender mainstreaming and can plan learning process, integrating curricular and outreach programmes to achieve the objective, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said.

Launching the silver jubilee celebrations of the SPMV, he said Indian leadership envisioned making India a knowledge superpower by 2020 which would be achieved only when high level-competitive competencies are promoted, capabilities strengthened and vulnerable sections of the society including women are empowered.

Young women tried to enter the portals of higher learning at a crucial and transitional age and limitations and irrational inequalities should be removed as a societal responsibility.

The future of India as a human resources giant depended on how best we could extend higher learning to women and harness their competence and capabilities.

Access to education for women would lead to success in every field, he said, adding norms governing education should be converged to meet the challenging needs of the present scenario.

The Minister said the rate of progress of women was in no way lesser to men in any field. But the harsh reality was the Gross EnrolLment Ratio (GER) of women in higher education was only four per cent as compared to boys whose GER was 12 per cent, he said.
