Pondy amends Pondicherry Hindu Marriage Registration Rules

Puducherry, Aug 25 (UNI) The Puducherry Administration has amended the Pondicherry Hindu Marriage Registration Rules, 1969 to ease the procedures involved in delayed registration of Hindu Marriages.

According to an official release here yesterday, the amended rules, called the Pondicherry Hindu Marriage (Registration)Amendement Rules,2007 and subsequent notifications, the Additional Secretary (Revenue) had been appointed as the Registrar General of Marriages and the District Registrar of the Registration Department as the District Registrar of Marriages for the entire Union Territory and the Sub-registrar of Registration Department were the marriage registrars.

As per the amended rules, Hindu Marriages may be registered by the Marriage Registrar within three months from the date of the marriage, he said and added that on adequate justification, the marriage registrar can himself condone the delay in registration beyond three months and up to five years from the date of marriage.

In case of delay in registration beyond five years and up to fifteen years from the date of marriage, District Registrar of Marriages had been empowered to grant special permission for registration of marriage and in case of delay beyond 15 years, the Additional Secretary (Revenue) had been empowered to grant special permission, the release added.
