Puri, Aug 25 (UNI) Timely police action prevented a major law and order situation that cropped up when a school boy was crushed to death by a speeding town bus.

Angry residents staged a 'raasta roko' and tried to damage the buses. The police soon rushed to the spot and took all the town buses to the reserve police line campus to escape mob fury.

According to the Kumbharpara police Bikash (7) was going to the school along with his father Gadadhar on a bicycle when the town bus dashed the cycle from behind.

The boy was crushed to death on the spot while his father escaped with bleeding injuries. Tension mounted in the area as the residents of Badasankha, peeved over the incident, tried to attack the buses The collector sanctioned Rs 10,000 to the victim's family from the red cross and sent the body for post mortem.

In 1994 also in a similar situation almost at the same place a kid was run over by the town bus. Inordinate delay in arrival of police on the spot triggered large scale violence and arson leading to police firing in which five people were killed.
