One died, 8 injured, bus falls from bridge
Howrah, Aug 25 (UNI) A man fell victim and eight others were seriously injured when a rogue bus fell from Bankim Setu here in the early hours today.
Police here said the private bus, coming from Kolkata, overturned after the driver lost control and fell on a passerby under the bridge killing him on the spot.
Police further said the accident occurred in one of the busiest area at about 0830 hours.
The eye-witnesses near the spot said the bus lost control broke through the railing of the bridge and fell on the road below. The bus was travelling at a breakneck speed and was trying to overtake another.
The eight injured have been rushed to Howrah General Hospital.
About two cranes have been pressed into service for rescue operations, police said adding that many of the victims were still inside the bus. Further reports are awaited.
However, the driver is absconding, police said.
Accidents caused by rash driving has become a regular phenomenon these days. In the last six months seven people have become victims to bus bullying in Kolkata alone.
