One dead, eight injured in bus accident

Howrah, Aug 25 (UNI) A man died and eight others were seriously injured when a bus fell from Bankim Setu here today.

Police here said the private bus, coming from Kolkata, overturned and fell on a passerby under the bridge, killing him on the spot, after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The accident occurred in one of the busiest areas at about 0830 hrs.

Eyewitnesses near the spot said the bus was travelling at breakneck speed and while trying to overtake another bus it lost control, broke through the railing of the bridge and fell on the road below.

Police said the injured were rushed to Howrah General Hospital, adding that about two cranes were pressed into service for the rescue operation and many were still trapped inside the bus.

However, the driver was absconding, police said.
