Central team assessing the damage due to floods in UP

Lucknow, Aug 25 (UNI) A central team visiting the flood hit areas of the state from thursday today took stock of the damage caused in Eastern parts of the state and assured all possible help from the centre Uttar Pradesh and other logistics.

Over a dozen districts of UP are under floods, and the Mayawati government has already asked for Rs 2200 crore for relief measures.

The Central government had constituted a 10-member team led by Joint Secretary (Home) K Skandan, to assess the losses's before sanctioing central assistance to UP government. The team will be in state till August 26, to give its report to the Central government.

The central contiagent had split into three teams to visit Barabanki, Bahraich, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Shravasti, Gonda, Basti and Maharajganj and assess the damage caused due to floods.

Mr Skandan, accompanied by UP relief commissioner Umesh Sinha, discussed the relief measures with the officials and directed the officials to speed up the same.

''While the floods in eastern UP are mainly caused by the rivers in Nepal, the permanent solution could only be achieved after a international agreement. The Centre is preparing a long-term plan in this regard,'' he said.

Mr Skandan ,however, made it clear that there would be no paucity of funds for flood relief and the Centre would extend help in every possible way.
