Fresh violence erupts at Nandigram; One killed

Nandigram, Aug 24 (UNI) A Bhumi Uchhed Protirodh Committee (BUPC) activist was killed and ten were injured in a clash with the CPI(M) activists at Dhulaghata village under Nandigram police station today.

East Midnapore Superintendent of Police G Srinivasan here said the deceased - Madhab Mandal - was killed on the spot.

The injured were admitted at Nandigram Hospital.

A dawn-to-dusk bandh was called tomorrow by the Trinamool Congress to protest the incident.

The clash started after the BUPC activists allegedly swooped down on Ranichak, setting at least 30 houses belonging to the CPI(M) supporters on fire.

Later, about 500 armed CPI(M) supporters tried to enter Nandigram forcibly through Ranichak, Sonachura and Dhulaghata but the BUPC workers put up a stiff resistance, and a clash ensued.

None had been arrested so far.

Tension previaled at Khejuri and Nandigram, the SP added.
