Dhaka Varsity Teachers Association leaders arrested by intelligence

Dhaka, Aug 24 (UNI) Bangladesh intelligence agency arrested the General Secretary of Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) Dr Anwar Hossain and another senior Professor Harunor Rashid, who led last week's anti-government movement by Dhaka University teachers demanding withdrawal of the state of emergency, from their houses for questioning.

Family sources said plain-clothed police equipped with arms arrested Dr Hossain and Prof Rashid for questioning late last night.

Both the teachers reside in the Tower Building on the university campus.

DUTA also supported the recent student agitation that prompted the government to impose a curfew from Wednesday night.

This is for the first time teachers of a university are arrested by the army-backed caretaker government that assumed office on January 12.
