DGP UP rebutted Mukhtar's allegations

Varanasi, Aug 24: Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police Vikram Singh today rubbished controversial independent MLA Mukhtar Ansari's allegation that he feared for his life from the top cop of the State.

''Perhaps Mr Ansari considers me a contract killer. There are many high profile criminals who level baseless allegations against me, but I have nothing to say about them. I am only answerable to the government which has appointed me to maintain law and order,'' Mr Singh told newspersons after meeting the cops at the district police lines here.

Mr Ansari the MLA from Mau and the prime accused in BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai murder case had recently said he feared for his life from BJP president Rajnath Singh and DGP Vikram Singh who had plotted to kill him in police custody.

Hinting towards more arrests of henchmen of Australia-New Zealand base Ejaz Lakdawala gang, the DGP said ''you will shortly see more results from the cops who are zeroing on other members of the gang in various parts of East UP.'' Lauding the end of bandit Dadua by the Special Task Force of UP Police as a major achievement, Mr Singh said no efforts would be spared by the police department to tighten the noose around other high-profile criminals.

However, The top cop advised IG Varanasi Zone to intensify efforts for busting local network of terrorist modules so that incidents like March 7, 2006 twin blast of Varanasi could not happen again.

On the issue of mafia dons operating from behind the bars, Mr Singh said introduction of measures like detaching mafia dons from the outer world were in the offing. Provisions like hearing of the cases of these dons in the courts through video conferencing and making the jails free of cellular mobiles would be implemented soon.

The DGP reached Varanasi on a surprise visit to the city in a private vehicle last night and kept the entire police establishment on its toes.
