Guwahati, Aug 24 (UNI) Taking exception to the community's ''inadequate'' representation in Assam government, Church leaders of the state have floated a new organisation to ''uphold and protect the rights and privileges of the Christian community.'' ''The Christian community in Assam is organised under different Churches and we feel the need for a common forum to look into the various socio-economic aspects of the community. The Constitution lists Christians as a religious group and they comprise about 3.7 per cent of the Assam population,'' Assam Christian Forum (ACF) spokesperson Allen Brook said.

Though small in number, the community had contributed immensely to the development of education, health and social services during the last 150 years in the state, Mr Brook claimed.

However, he rued that the community was not adequately represented in the bodies constituted by the Assam government for the development of the minorities.

The ACF had been formed to explore possibilities of working with different agencies and government to promote the overall welfare of Assam, Mr Brook added.
