Chief Minister suspended DGP Mohanti

Bhubaneswar, Aug 24 (UNI) Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today suspended Orissa's Director General of Police (Home Guard) B B Mohanti after the Rajasthan police served him a non-bailable arrest warrant (NBW) for abetting his son Bitihotra, convicted and sentenced in a rape case, jump parole.

The chief minister before serving the suspension order rejected his a leave application.

The NBW was served following a court order against the DGP for abetting his son Bitihotra, convicted and sentenced to seven-year imprisonment for raping a German research scholar at Alwar in Rajasthan, jump parole on December 4 last.

The NBW was handed over to Cuttack Superintendent of Police Somendra Priyadarshi, who, however, could not execute it as Mohanti was neither available in his office nor at his residence in Cuttack.

Asked about Mohanti's presence, state Home Secretary Tarun Kanti Mishra said he had no idea about Mohanti's whereabouts, but said the DGP would be arrested if he did not surrender before the police.

The Home Secretary said the DGP had applied for seven days medical leave with permission to leave the station but the application was rejected and was sent to him through a special messenger.

The Chief Minister office issued a one line press note stating that the DGP was suspended after Mr Patnaik had a discussion with state Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy over the NBW issue.

Police said the suspension order would now facilitate them to execute the arrest warrant on the DGP who is yet to be traced.
