BrahMos missiles to be deployed on Indian submarines: Spokesman

Moscow, Aug 24 (UNI) Indian submarines will be equipped with world-class BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, jointly designed and produced by India and Russia.

"India is building mostly French Scorpene class submarines. But soon the Indian Navy will have to decide about additional submarines. It is not known yet which submarines, but what is certain is that they will be equipped with BrahMos missiles," Alexander Maksichev, spokesman for the Russia-India BrahMos joint venture told Interfax-AVN news agency today, at the Moscow Aviation and Space Salon (MAKS-2007) at Zhukovsky, near Moscow.

The BrahMos missile, named after the rivers Brahmaputra and Moskva are produced by BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, an Indo-Russian joint venture formed by Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM) and India's DRDO.

The supersonic missile, with a range of about 290 km, with a speed of 3,500 km an hour has been inducted into the Indian army and navy.

BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited is still awaiting an Indo-Russian inter-governmental agreement allowing the joint venture to sell the missiles to third countries as several countries have shown keen interest in buying the advanced BrahMos missile system.
